Visit Tamworth

A one-of-a-kind experience.”

— Country Living Magazine

Nestled in the shadow of the White Mountains, Tamworth Distilling & Mercantile is one of the most innovative distilleries in the world — and it wouldn’t be possible anywhere else. Every spirit we make is rooted in a deep connection to our rural New Hampshire home: from local grains to foraged botanicals to ingredients grown in our literal backyard.

The Distillery

From the moment you arrive, you’ll sense that this is a different kind of distillery. You’ll smell the sweet, oaken aroma wafting from the barrel house, hear the wind rustle through our garden, catch a glimpse of our copper stills quietly working their alchemy, or even spot one of our latest experiments through the window of our state-of-the-art test kitchen.

Step up to the Tasting Bar and start exploring: try a curated flight to taste our spirits in their purest form, or sample a perfectly crafted cocktail. The Retail Shop offers our full lineup of spirits — including limited edition offerings, and bottles only available at the distillery — as well as a complete selection of cocktail ingredients, mixers, bar tools, and accoutrements.

“One of the most beautiful distilleries in America.”

Where Flavor Grows

Behind the distillery, a garden of plants native to New Hampshire grows. This essential part of our distilling process is carefully cultivated throughout the seasons to supply the herbs, flowers, fruits, and botanical’s that infuse our spirits with unmistakable character. Depending upon when you visit, you may see everything from elde flower to angelica root to lemon balm in our distillery garden.

Wilderness to Glass

Not only do the distillers utilize the garden, they forage from the surrounding land for ingredients. We’re constantly inspired by our wild surroundings, looking for ways to combine and transform them into the perfect expression of Tamworth’s unique terroir.

In season, you’re invited to take a cocktail and a snack down by the Swift River, just down the hill behind the distillery. We find it’s one of the most peaceful places to sip, snack, and contemplate. Throughout the year, we urge you to wander further: to a winding forest path, a cross-country ski trail, or a stunning mountain lookout. Tamworth has it all.

Tamworth Village

Named one of the Best Small Towns in America by Country Living, Tamworth is a beautiful, idyllic village with plenty of history and culture to explore. Since its founding in 1766, it has drawn artists, thinkers and creatives from e.e. Cummings to Henry David Thoreau to President Grover Cleveland.

Visit, explore, and discover inspiration of your own — hike a mountain trail, enjoy a show at the Barnstormers Theater, or take a trip back in time at the Remick Country Doctor Museum & Farm.

Weddings & Events

We’re honored to be part of your story, whether it’s serving up signature cocktails or hosting rehearsal dinners. Our team will help plan every detail, so you can simply enjoy.

MEET OUR FOUNDER

Steven Grasse

Steven Grasse is founder of Tamworth Distilling and Mercantile and the creative mind behind some of the most iconic spirits brands of the 21st century, including Hendrick’s Gin and Sailor Jerry Rum.

Steven launched Tamworth Distilling & Mercantile in 2015 in the heart of Tamworth Village, New Hampshire. Inspired by the transcendentalist history of the area, as well as its agricultural heritage, he set to work creating one of the most imaginative farm-to-bottle distilleries in the country.  Fueled by a passion for authenticity and innovation, he and his team experiment with local ingredients, foraged botanicals, and centuries-old techniques to craft spirits that are as inventive as they are rooted in place.

His “story-first” model of branding combines art, history, culture, and design, creating brand worlds people want to explore — and liquids interesting enough that they redefine categories.

Quaker City Mercantile

Steven is also the founder of Quaker City Mercantile, a Philadelphia-based creative agency known for building some of the most distinctive alcohol brands in the world. Through Quaker City, he’s developed campaigns and products for global companies while continuing to create his own experimental brands — including Art in the Age Spirits, based in Pennsylvania, and The Pathfinder, a non-alcoholic amaro he co-owns.

Grasse's Legacy

In addition to his work in spirits and branding, Steven is a published author whose books blend cultural insight, history, and creativity. His titles include Brand Mysticism, Colonial Spirits, The Cocktail Workshop, Backcountry Cocktails, and The Evil Empire, among others.

Whether drawing from nature, history, or bold ideas, Steven Grasse continues to challenge convention and push the boundaries of what spirits — and storytelling — can be.
