Sustainability at Tamworth

Sustainability is deeply ingrained into our brand’s ethos. We utilize the surrounding environment in ways that are non-intrusive, and never wasteful, while also giving back to the local community around us.

Locally Sourced Ingredients

We use a Neutral Grain Spirit base to craft many of our spirits. Often distilleries purchase their Neutral Grain Spirits from an industrial producer, but here at Tamworth Distilling we distill our own. Made from organic corn, rye, and malt – all the ingredients that we use to distill are sourced from farms within a 150-mile radius of our New Hampshire distillery.

Local Partnerships

Oftentimes, grain goes to waste after the distillation process-but not here. Once we’re finished distilling, the leftover spent grain is sent to local farms, such as White Gates Farm, where it’s used as warm cattle feed or compost. After those farms have been supplied, we also donate spent grain to our local bakery partners. Sunnyfield Brick Oven Bakery uses our donated spent grain to make a unique loaf dubbed “Distiller’s Bread,” crafted with organic flours, cornmeal, blackstrap molasses, yeast, sea salt, and malted barley.

Sustainable Spirits

Green crabs are an invasive species wreaking havoc on New England’s coastal ecosystem. We wanted to do something about it, so we partnered with the University of New Hampshire to create House of Tamworth Crab Trapper Whiskey-a bourbon steeped with a custom blend of green crab, corn, and spices, reminiscent of a classic Low Country Boil.

This sustainable sipper flooded the news when it went viral – it was featured on outlets such as The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Food & Wine, NPR, Forbes, USA Today, VinePair, and more.

Whiskey for Conservation

Not only do we help the environment by using ingredients that remove invasive species from the coast, but we also craft charitable spirits that give back to the planet. One dollar from every bottle of Tamworth Distilling Chocorua Straight Rye Whiskey, a 100% organic rye whiskey and one of our most renowned spirits, benefits the Chocora Lake Conservancy, helping to protect and preserve the majestic Chocorua Mountain and the Chocorua Lake Basin.

Sustainable Barrel House

Built with timber sourced within 10 miles of our distillery and crafted by local artisan Whit Patridge, a one-man sawmill owner and timber framer, our new barrel house has sustainability literally built into its foundation. The building operates without electricity or fossil fuels. Instead, it was designed with an east-west orientation and a south-facing façade to maximize year-round sunlight, creating passive solar heating and allowing the structure to function much like a greenhouse.

Local Partnerships

In addition to supporting fellow local businesses through donations, our team sources ingredients not only from our own backyard botanical garden, but from nearby farms as well. Our Tamworth Garden collection offers a wide range of scratch-made botanical spirits, including a line of cordials crafted with locally foraged ingredients.

Tamworth Garden Black Trumpet Blueberry Cordial is a perfect example of our commitment to sustainable sourcing. We purchase organic blueberries from Burke Hill Farm in Maine, harvest lavender and lemon verbena from our backyard garden, and source foraged black trumpet mushrooms from the New Hampshire Mushroom Company, located right here in Tamworth.

MEET OUR FOUNDER

Steven Grasse

Steven Grasse is founder of Tamworth Distilling and Mercantile and the creative mind behind some of the most iconic spirits brands of the 21st century, including Hendrick’s Gin and Sailor Jerry Rum.

Steven launched Tamworth Distilling & Mercantile in 2015 in the heart of Tamworth Village, New Hampshire. Inspired by the transcendentalist history of the area, as well as its agricultural heritage, he set to work creating one of the most imaginative farm-to-bottle distilleries in the country.  Fueled by a passion for authenticity and innovation, he and his team experiment with local ingredients, foraged botanicals, and centuries-old techniques to craft spirits that are as inventive as they are rooted in place.

His “story-first” model of branding combines art, history, culture, and design, creating brand worlds people want to explore — and liquids interesting enough that they redefine categories.

Quaker City Mercantile

Steven is also the founder of Quaker City Mercantile, a Philadelphia-based creative agency known for building some of the most distinctive alcohol brands in the world. Through Quaker City, he’s developed campaigns and products for global companies while continuing to create his own experimental brands — including Art in the Age Spirits, based in Pennsylvania, and The Pathfinder, a non-alcoholic amaro he co-owns.

Grasse's Legacy

In addition to his work in spirits and branding, Steven is a published author whose books blend cultural insight, history, and creativity. His titles include Brand Mysticism, Colonial Spirits, The Cocktail Workshop, Backcountry Cocktails, and The Evil Empire, among others.

Whether drawing from nature, history, or bold ideas, Steven Grasse continues to challenge convention and push the boundaries of what spirits — and storytelling — can be.
